Abstrait:

The future fourth longest suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 1550 m – the Izmit Bay Bridge – will carry the new Gebze-Orhangazi-Bursa-İzmir motorway across the Sea of Marmara at the Bay of Izmit in Turkey. The striking distance to the North Anatolian Fault which forms the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Anatolian block of the African Plate determines the design concept of the substructures. Besides the high seismic loads, global and local ship impacts are governing.

This paper deals with the detailed design of the tower foundations and anchorages for the large suspension cables. The substructure design of the Izmit Bay Bridge comprises a complex analysis of the soil-structure interaction, structural verification for important construction stages and for final stages in service, ultimate and accidental limit states. The paper describes special design issues and focuses on innovative concepts in regard to analysis, robust design, construction time and constructability as well as efficient use of construction materials.
